When the days are short and the temperatures are low, driving conditions can be hazardous. In the South Island, that often means snow and ice, and for the North Island slick roads, heavy rain and sometimes fog.

At Vero, we see a large number of claims for road accidents over winter – but there are lots of simple steps you can take to prevent accidents.

In this video, some of our people give their tips for driving in winter

5 tips for staying safe on the road

1.

Check your vehicle

Simple checks like ensuring your tyres have enough tread and your head lights are working can make a huge difference when driving in wet conditions.

2.

Have supplies on hand

Although we all hope to avoid accidents this winter, it’s a good idea to have supplies like a first aid kit or blankets on hand to attend to injuries or stay warm if something happens.

3.

Store your vehicles

If you can put cars and motorbikes in a garage or covered area, it can decrease the risk of damage occurring during stormy weather.

4.

Drive to the conditions

It may be obvious but simple things like slowing down, breaking before turns and scanning your environment can help keep you safe on the road.

5.

Know your terrain

For those of us who enjoy a good ski trip, precautions such as chains on your vehicle will reduce the risk of skidding on those slippery mountain drives.
